The Local Government Unit of Taguig and The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) took the first step into working together for animal welfare by conducting a seminar workshop on animal control guidelines, humane dog catching and building and management of impounding facility for stray animals.

The seminar workshop which was held on September 6, 2011 aimed to promote and expand animal welfare to 25 officials of Barangay Fort Bonifacio along with Taguig Councilor Lino Cayetano, who expressed plans of building an animal control facility for the City of Taguig and asked for PAWS’s inputs.

Led by PAWS executive director Anna Cabrera and senior volunteer May Felix-Razon, the five-hour seminar started with a detailed tour around the PAWS shelter recommending the possibility of building an adoption-friendly impounding center rather than an animal control warehouse with a purpose of just eliminating animals taken in by officials. The requirements and maintenance for the proper upkeep of the facility were also emphasized.

To further expand the possible project, the responsibilities of an Animal Control Officer (ACO) were also discussed. Understanding canine body language and the correct ways of approaching a dog, proper use of catch nets and poles, as well as the use of gloves and muzzles were also demonstrated.

A follow-up seminar on building a proper animal control facility and a responsible pet ownership seminar for the constituents of Barangay Fort Bonifacio is already in line.
