On December 29, 2012, the Ecowaste Coalition and PAWS, together with other animal welfare groups CARA, AKF and Pets for Peace, rallied against the use of firecrackers for the New Year.

All the groups appealed to the public not to use firecrackers which are harmful to the environment and pose a risk both to humans and animals. The loud noise emanating from firecrackers also causes undue stress on our animal companions.

“Please keep your pet dogs and cats secure indoors on the afternoon of December 31st all the way into the early morning of January 1st,” says PAWS Executive Director, Anna Cabrera. “It is during this time of the year that we receive a lot of reports about animals getting lost or getting injured. Please try to protect your pets by keeping them in a room away from the streets where firecrackers are usually thrown.”
