Rescue, Rehab & Adoption

The PAWS shelter is intended for animals involved in cases of cruelty or neglect. We provide physical and behavioral rehabilitation for these rescued animals to be able to find them forever homes, while their cases are pending in court.

Why can’t PAWS rescue all animals in distress?

It’s simply impossible to do this, because there are thousands of starving and injured animals that need help, while the shelter has 1) very limited space, 2) very limited number of caretakers and volunteers, and 3) strict quarantine protocols. That’s why we prioritize animals involved in cruelty or neglect cases so that we can bring offenders to justice.

Quarantine Protocols

Newly admitted animals are placed in quarantine to ensure that disease does not spread within our facility. Our quarantine area is almost always at full capacity, unless people agree to foster or provide a temporary home to these animals until they can be admitted.

“PAWS, please rescue this poor dog!”

We get numerous calls and emails like this every day. It is impossible to rescue each and every stray or injured animal, but people get very upset when we are unable to do so. Remember, PAWS is a non-government organization made up of volunteers. “Concerned citizens” must not depend on PAWS or any other animal welfare organizations alone. Everyone must do their part.

Who needs to be rescued?

Priority is given to animals who are suffering from cruelty or neglect. When we get reports of hit and run, animals that are dying of starvation, or very young kittens or puppies left on a busy highway to die, we can give them emergency care if kindhearted citizens or volunteers agree to foster or give them a temporary home until there is space at the shelter.

What should I do?

Post on social media and wait? Call or email PAWS and demand a rescue? If the animal is in imminent danger, then YOU are their best chance of survival. If you are unable to remove the animal from danger, a PAWS volunteer may be able to assist. The animal may be brought to the shelter for emergency treatment, but admission cannot be guaranteed.

Cruelty or Pet Neglect

Animal cruelty and pet neglect are criminal offenses. However, PAWS does not have the authority to confiscate owned animals without court orders in place. If the reporting citizen is committed to executing an affidavit and appearing in court, PAWS will provide legal assistance. Otherwise, offenders will only keep abusing and mistreating animals.

Rehoming / Adoption

There are now over 300 rescued cats and dogs at the shelter that are waiting to be adopted. We have an obligation to get them treated, rehabilitated, and adopted into good homes. PAWS does not adopt animals from people who simply want to abandon their pets. We can help with rehoming owned pets provided they meet the criteria for rehoming assistance.

Ready to Foster or Adopt?

We are committed to finding loving homes for these rescued animals, so all interested adopters or fosterers go through a screening process. If you wish to adopt, we invite you to visit the shelter to meet our adoptable cats and dogs. Spending quality time with them is the best way to tell who will fit your personality and lifestyle the most. In the meantime, you can browse their profiles to see their cute pics and amazing stories!
